Not only is O Pie O a super fun name for a bakery in Ohio, but it’s also a great place to visit on your next date night!
We are a family business – brother, brother-in-law and assorted relatives – making pies according to season, our childhood memories and sometimes whim, using ingredients from local farmers and producers whenever we can. Our chef, Ian Sobeck, a recent transplant from Seattle where he ran the kitchen at Sutra, has definite ideas about what makes a good pie. As do other members of the family.
We’ve opened our doors on DeSales Corner in East Walnut Hills, serving sweet and savory pies, as well as small bites. You’ll also find a robust, well-paired wine and beer menu. And on Sundays, we offer a brunch menu featuring special menu items, mimosas and house-made Bloody Marys.
We had a chance to do just that, but instead of a “date night”…we made it an “afternoon date.” O pie O is easy to find in East Walnut Hills, and with a parking lot right next door, there was no driving around looking for a place to park! The atmosphere inside is modern meets rustic, with a gorgeous farmhouse table in the middle of the room and fun seating all around. When you walk in, go up to the counter, order your food and find a seat. On a nice day, like it was for our date, be sure to grab a table outside!
O Pie O has more than just delicious flaky butter sweet pies, they also serve delicious flaky butter savory pies! We were hungry for lunch, so we ordered the chicken pot pie, ham and cheese pocket and, upon the owners recommendation, the corn and cheese empanada. All of the entrées were so good, but the empanada was our favorite! It came with a tomatillo and chimichurri sauce that you will want to put on everything!
If you order an entrée, it will also come with your choice of a side dish. You can pick between their wood burn chili (hearty and filling), carolina slaw (amazing..I took home leftovers!), malabar tomato soup or mixed greens with house-made dressings (the carrot-sesame-miso dressing was crisp and refreshing).
Now…on to the sweet pies!! The menu changes so be sure to ask your server or check the board to see what’s in stock when you visit. We had the rhubarb, honey vinegar and a strawberry frangipane pocket pie. Honey and vinegar…together…in a pie? My thoughts exactly…but I am so glad we ordered it! It’s one of their most popular pies, and I can easily taste why! It was creamy, sweet…with a hint of tang…so so good! And I am a rhubarb girl, which was also really good…but when you go, try the honey and vinegar! Also, funny little tidbit…the flowers they serve with the pies…are edible!
Go check out O Pie O and come back here and let me know which pie you liked best!
