How to Build the Perfect Charcuterie Board
Charcuterie boards have taken off in recent years—and it’s easy to see why. They’re flavorful, customizable, and a visual centerpiece for any gathering. Jungle Jim’s International Market cheese and charcuterie buyer Jacob Hacker shares his best tips for building a board that impresses every guest.
1. Start with the Meats
Choose at least two varieties. Begin with classics like ham or turkey, then add something bold or spicy. Jacob recommends Leoncini Prosciutto di Parma, Smoking Goose Sopressata, and Zoe’s Ghost Pepper Salami for flavor variety and presentation.
2. Add a Mix of Cheeses
Aim for four or more—one from each category: soft, semi-soft, firm, and blue. Favorites include Point Reyes Blue Cheese, Urban Stead Gouda from Walnut Hills, and Barber’s English Cheddar.
3. Include Bread & Crackers
Pair your selections with hearty breads (baguette, ciabatta, or multigrain) and crisp, sturdy crackers like Firehook.
4. Brighten It Up with Fruit
Fruits add color, sweetness, and freshness. Mix dried options like apricots and strawberries with fresh pears and grapes.
5. Don’t Forget the Spreads
Include at least one sweet and one savory option. Try In the Curious Kitchen’s Bourbon Honey Mustard, hummus, tapenade, local honey, or jam.
6. Final Touches
Round out your board with pickles, olives, and mixed nuts—walnuts, almonds, or pistachios work well. A sprig of rosemary adds the perfect finishing touch.
7. Assembly Tips
Start with your larger items, then fill the gaps with smaller bites. Use ramekins for dips and spreads, slice or roll meats for easy serving, and distribute crackers and nuts in multiple spots for easy reach.
